including several snacks made with eggplant, and a yogurt cacik that
disappeared almost immediately. Two spinning gyros—chicken and
lamb—compete for your patronage, as dothe kofta and adana kebabs." Pizza.

"Denino's (524 Port Richmond Avenue) is the kind of throwback restaurant
where asking for a salad brings laughter. Crunchy-but-not-brittle
crusts are the foundation for pies ranging from basic
mozzarella-and-tomato-sauce to the ricotta-onion-and-meatballs blowout.
For a beverage, try the unexpectedly tasty sangria. You'll be the one
laughing when the check arrives and it's under $20." Ice cream parlor. (Bridge & Tunnel Club,

"There are still a number of old-fashioned ice cream parlors left in New
York, all worth visiting, including Egger's at 1194 Forest Avenue in
Staten Island, which was founded in 1927 and continues to serve
excellent malts and a wonderful banana ice cream." (NY Times)

"Open for 70 years, Egger's
is the big island's most respected purveyor of custom-made chocolates
and homemade ice cream. This sit-down ice cream parlor also features a
soda fountain with twirling stools, which is the best place to enjoy
such arcane and rapidly disappearing delights as egg creams; root beer
floats; mixed-to-order sodas in flavors like black cherry, chocolate,
cherry Coke, and vanilla; and, especially, their thick milk shakes.
These milk shakes can be turned into spectacular malts with the
addition of malt powder, which is exceedingly rare these days—places
that still make them usually do it with rancid-tasting syrup." (Village Voice Best of 2006)

are distinguished by a superthin crispy crust. "They're easier to

"What Killmeyer's Old Bavaria Inn lacks in easy accessibility it more
than makes up for with its beer garden. The regulars know drinking is a
serious undertaking to be done while a live oompah band plays "The
Chicken Dance." The garden's outdoor bar has an über-long beer list

"It's a shock... to spot a buba-and-lapa when driving through the red-sauce
zones of Staten Island. Yet a West African community has established a
beachhead there and vigorously maintains its identity with churches,
shops, and, yes, restaurants....Malian mud-cloth curtains and
tablecloths and Senufo wall hangings of ostriches set the mood at a
lunch stop popular with taxi drivers, businessmen, and expatriate
families who want to make sure that their children know fufu as well as
fries...The menu is simple and rotates throughout the week." "Well, first place
always goes to Denino's or Joe and Pat's, but who deserves second
place? I would have said Nunzio's, except I can't stand it since they
moved from the beach shack to the new facility, which is sterile and
off-putting. Nearby is Larocca's, which serves a wide range of
pies in various styles, both ancient and modern. The upside-down
Sicilian—with the cheese underneath and the sauce on top—is
particularly good, and so is the Staten Island–style Sicilian, with a
crust midway between Neapolitan and Sicilian in thickness. There's an
Italian ice store next door if you happen to be in the mood." (Village Voice Best of 2006)

"A slice from Nunzio's is a pristine exercise in elegant pizza
minimalism. Everything about it is right: the ratio of sauce to cheese,
the crisp yet pliant crust and the tangy sauce enlivened by fresh
basil. Nunzio's even looks the way a pizzeria should: it is a white
stucco shack with a tiny dining room brightened by black and white
photos of the original Nunzio's in South Beach, Staten Island. " (NY Times)
